Emergency Department Doctor

About the role

The Emergency Department (ED) Doctor works within the ICRC ED team to raise the quality of emergency care in supported hospitals across Yemen. The role combines clinical duties, capacity‑building of local staff, and contribution to ICRC emergency preparedness and response activities. The doctor may be deployed on short‑term missions to selected hospitals and must be ready to travel throughout the country.

Key responsibilities

• Promote a standardized approach to emergency care by ensuring ICRC and local protocols are available, taught and followed.
• Assess training needs, design and deliver theoretical and practical emergency‑care training.
• Provide on‑site mentoring and capacity‑building for ED staff, supporting evidence‑based practice.
• Orient new staff and identify motivated participants for local trainer roles.
• Support quality‑improvement initiatives in collaboration with nursing, medical and managerial teams.
• Develop and maintain training resources such as libraries, teaching materials and skills labs.
• Report violations related to health care in danger to ICRC protection and health departments.
• Contribute to Basic Emergency Care (BEC) schedules, validate staff competency, and ensure functional triage processes.

Required profile

• Medical doctor with experience in emergency medicine.
• Willingness and ability to travel throughout Yemen, including conflict‑affected areas.
• Experience in training, capacity‑building and quality improvement in hospital settings.
• Ability to work collaboratively with ICRC departments and local health authorities.

Required skills

• Emergency medicine clinical skills.

• Design and delivery of emergency‑care training programs.
• Capacity‑building and mentorship of medical staff.
• Knowledge of national and international emergency‑care standards (e.g., Basic Emergency Care).
