Protection Assistant – Legal Aid & HLP

About the role

The Protection Assistant – Legal Aid & HLP supports vulnerable populations in Yemen by delivering high‑quality legal information, counseling, and documentation services. Working under the Legal Aid Team Leader, the role focuses on civil documentation, housing, land and property (HLP) issues, and related awareness activities in community centres and mobile teams.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct legal awareness sessions on civil documentation and HLP topics for IDPs, returnees and host communities.
• Provide individual legal counseling on documentation, eviction risks, tenancy and tenure security.
• Assist beneficiaries in completing and submitting official application forms for IDs and birth certificates in coordination with the CRA office in Aden.
• Support beneficiaries in gathering required documents and navigating eligibility criteria.
• Document, mitigate and follow up on HLP‑related legal concerns in line with DRC procedures.
• Maintain clear communication with beneficiaries about possible courses of action.
• Undertake field visits to assess legal protection needs and monitor case progress.

Required profile

• Experience in legal aid, humanitarian protection or related fields.
• Familiarity with civil documentation processes and HLP issues in conflict‑affected settings.
• Ability to work under supervision and follow established SOPs.
• Strong communication skills for group sessions and one‑on‑one counseling.

Required skills

• Knowledge of national civil documentation regulations and HLP legal frameworks.
• Proficiency in completing official application forms accurately.
• Ability to assess legal risks and advise beneficiaries on options.
